We always feel excited when our students share the learning they are doing at home. Kaliyah has been practising her fast words and she has been doing some doubles work too. These are just some of the things we have been working on in the classroom and Kaliyah has been showing her family at home.
Welcome to our class blog. We are the year 1 students at Russell Street School in Palmerston North. We encourage you to follow our learning and please leave your comments too.
Our blog helps us to continue our learning anywhere, anytime. It links us to our favourite learning sites and allows us to share our learning with the whole wide world.

WRITING
While we we talking about things we are good at, Fiona discovered many of us love scootering. We think this video is really cool.
Today we wrote about it. We brainstormed these words for a word back ...
Reagan is learning to write fast words, while also using finger spaces, so that he can share his stories ...
I saw the man on his scooter and he did a back flip. That is amazing. It was very cool.
Connor has the same goal ...
Scooter ring man did a back flip and a front flip and he twisted his handle bars.
Victoria is learning to use joining words ...
I can do a back flip, because my mum taught me on a scooter and it was fun. I always do go on my scooter, because it is fun, very fun.
Helna is very good at using joining words now. Her next goal is to use new WOW words. We look for these in books we are reading ...
I love scootering with my scooter, because it is a Barbie scooter and I love my Barbie scooter very much. I love going to the park too.

WORD BOOKS
We have word lists in books in our reading folders. Please can you help me every day to learn these words by reading them randomly with me? Please keep the book in my folder so that I can read them at school with an adult as well. When I know them Robin will put a new list in. If you have any queries please come and have a chat with Robin.

WHALE WATCH
Today we were reminded how to show outstanding behaviour on the mat. We need to:
- come quickly and quietly
- listen to the teacher (this way we can respond - another Tohora nui whale)
- sit with our legs crossed and our arms folded (with our clothes on properly)
- face the front
- have our hands empty (no toys on the mat)
- put our hand up to share our ideas (we cannot listen to ideas if we are all talking at once)
Many people showed their outstanding behaviour today, while sitting on the mat. Let's see how many others we can get in our photo tomorrow!
WHALE COLLAGES
On Friday we started our whale collages. We had to rip up small bits of magazine, using different colours. These will be our whales. It was exciting and we made a lot of mess. We all had to pitch in to clean it up. We like it when Fiona has a special piece of rubbish that needs to be collected.
TOHORA NUI SINGING
Whale watch during Tohora nui singing! These students from room 3 were recognised for either showing outstanding behaviour or trying their very best.

BUDDY CLASS
At buddy class on Friday, Poutokomanawa (room 11) helped us with learning our class song TOHORA NUI. Thank you so much! Special mention must go to Cooper and Harrison. They are so enthusiastic and really help us to enjoy singing too. You should have seen them performing at school singing on Friday!
SCOOTER RULES
On Friday there was an important notice in the yellow book. This is what it said ...
We investigated, so that everyone would understand the rules ...

Drawing
We have begun drawing every morning and today we drew kites. We listen to Robin's instructions and watch as she draws and we draw along with her. Robin says you could hear a pin drop when we are drawing.

WRITING
In room 2 we have been doing interactive writing. Fiona writes and we write too. We have been learning to use fast words around the room to help us record our ideas. We are also learning to leave finger spaces between our words, so that we can share our stories with others.
Fiona is impressed, as we try our best. This our first Tohora nui whale.
And here is our writing ...

SWIMMING
Why should we learn to swim?
New Zealand is an island nation. We are no more than 40 minutes to a beach, river, lake or stream. A lot of our recreational activities are water based and being able to swim will ensure that you and your child can safely be part of the fun.
All of the children in Tohora nui are at different stages with their swimming. You may find some of these videos helpful, as you encourage your child to feel safe and confident in the water.
The best way to help your child with water confidence, is being in the pool with them.
BLOWING BUBBLES
PUTTING YOUR HEAD UNDER THE WATER
FRONT FLOAT
FLOATING ON MY BACK
FREESTYLE KICK
